WHY THIS FORUM IS DIFFERENT

Postby pile » Sat May 31, 2008 2:09 am

There are a lot of places online where people can discuss things...

However, there aren't a lot of places where people can discuss things freely.

To date, we have not banned a single person, ever for contributing. I want to make it abundantly clear that this is not a forum where we will censor people if they say something in contrast to what the majority thinks. As long as you're not majorly disrupting things, you are able to talk about whatever you want. There aren't many forums like this anywhere. We respect peoples' opinions regardless of whether they agree or disagree with the status-quo, the consensus of regular users or whatever.

Help us celebrate this and promote this ideal by becoming part of this community.

Hello, I just found this place.

Unfortunately I have to say that I strongly disagree with your statement: "We respect peoples' opinions regardless of whether they agree or disagree with the status-quo".

Should it rather not be: "We respect people regardless of their opinions"? That would be in line with Pat Condell's video on respect for religious beliefs.

Please confirm that this is the case or justify why it is not.

Regards

There's a difference between respecting people and respecting their opinions.

I have no reason to disrespect a person without cause. However, if someone comes in and starts expressing an opinion that I might find objectionable (i.e. pedophilia is "ok", christianity is a "force for good", evolution is not true), I am allowed to not respect that opinion. The problem is many theists cannot draw the distinction between what they think and who they are. That's their problem. Respect is earned. Especially in cases where we're talking about a lifestyle choice. Being a Christian is a choice. Being blind or Chinese isn't. Respect for the former must be earned, respect for the latter is something decent people do. But a person's beliefs should not garner instant, unconditional respect.

I began a thread , and I should have came here first.........I feel that the flood of drug offers from ShaktarrDon(wetf his name is) will ruin any chance of viability for this board/site. I've seen sites inundated by this sort of crap and from experience as people visit browse and explore the site, the impression given and perceived is that "just as I thought ,it's nothing but mindless drug zombies...just look at the message boards" I know that each of us have become more than familiar with the mindset of those who frown upon "Freethought".I suspect another member that recently joined and posted may be the beginning of the flood ,just based on patterns seen at the other sites I've witnessed destroyed.
